Product Description:
The ACS8025-550F is a motion unit manufactured by Kollmorgen for the AC SuperDrive Motion Units series. It functions as a field-mounted inverter that conditions a direct-current bus for closed-loop control of three-phase induction motors with squirrel-cage rotors in automated material-handling, packaging, and forming machinery. Through a CANopen fieldbus port, it exchanges velocity, position, and status words with PLCs so that mechanical axes follow commanded profiles inside industrial plants.
The power stage operates from a nominal DC bus of 80 VDC, which establishes the maximum fundamental voltage the inverter can synthesize for the connected motor. A continuous driving capability of 220 Arms lets the unit sustain steady-state torque without thermal current reduction, while a one-hour apparent power ceiling of 23.6 kVA indicates the available output over extended operating periods. Pulse-width modulation is updated at 8 kHz, giving finer current resolution and reducing acoustic noise compared with lower-frequency drives. The electronics reside in an enclosure rated at IP54, which limits dust ingress and protects against splashing water when the unit is flange-mounted to a cabinet wall. CANopen supervision uses a 50 ms watchdog window, and any bus silence exceeding that window prompts an orderly removal of torque. The housing has an overall width of 244 mm and a finned mass of 9.4 kg, allowing direct mounting to internal panel studs.
For short-term overloads, the inverter can supply 550 Arms for up to two minutes. During that interval, it supports a peak apparent output of 51.9 kVA to accelerate heavy loads or overcome sticking friction. To maintain this surge, forced cooling air must pass across the heat sink at 6 m/s. When airflow is inadequate and the heat sink reaches 85 °C, the control system reduces current until the temperature subsides. A separate current reduction begins if the motor thermal model predicts a temperature of 145 °C. After an unresolved fault, the unit observes a 150 ms disable period before the rearming logic engages.
