The 6SM 45-L-3000-G is one of the most advanced industrial motor designs built by Kollmorgen Automation. It is a compact device that is able to easily meet the high torque and dynamic requirements of industrial robots, textile machines, and packaging machines. The control of this motor design is exclusively restricted by drive controllers belonging to the SERVOSTAR series with a voltage supply that does not exceed 400 volts. This motor is not an independent device; it should be installed and used as an electrical apparatus used in production and processing operations. Also, the direct connection of the motor to the main supply units should be avoided. The 6SM 45-L-3000-G is a brushless device; the permanent magnets responsible for its operation are made from rare earth Neodymium-iron boron magnetic material. The special choice of magnetic material is responsible for the highly dynamic operation of the motor.

There are three windings installed in the stator of the 6SM 45-L-3000-G motor; these windings are controlled by the connected servo amplifier. Unlike traditional motor designs that often feature air blowers for heat dissipation, the 6SM 45-L-3000-G is able to get rid of excess heat through natural convection and thermal radiation. The heat transfer process of the motor is also aided by the ribbed design of the motor housing. As an additional protection against overtemperature damage, the 6SM 45-L-3000-G is fitted with a temperature sensor that is monitored by the amplifier; these sensors help operators quickly detect any risk of overtemperature.

The 6SM 45-L-3000-G motor has a resolver which functions as its feedback unit and provides the amplifier with the digital signal it requires to monitor the rotor, position and current in the motor. There is a chemically resistant matt black coating covering the housing of this motor to prevent deterioration over long periods of use.
