The 5645-039 indexer driver is produced by Kollmorgen as part of the 5000 Indexer Drivers series. Designed to coordinate stepper positioning stages and automated tooling, the unit converts high-level motion commands into timed pulse and direction signals for motor amplifiers. It integrates the sequencing, trajectory generation, and bus power conversion required to simplify cabinet layouts in discrete manufacturing lines where compact motion control hardware is preferred.

Communication with a host PLC is supported at a selectable 9600 baud rate, allowing parameter transfers without external converters during setup or program changes. Inside the power stage, a chopper regulator operates at 20 kHz, which reduces audible noise while maintaining current linearity. The factory default phase current is set to 5.0 A RMS, and microstepping to a finest increment of 1/125 of a revolution improves low-speed smoothness and short indexing accuracy. When axis inertia demands additional torque, the driver can draw up to 13 A RMS from the AC mains, and its pulse generator can accept positioning commands as fast as 500,000 pulses/s, supporting rapid indexing in pick-and-place cells and packaging feeders.

Resolution with a 1.8° stepper reaches 25,000 steps/rev, so small positional errors are minimized during contour moves and short incremental advances. All stored motion scripts reside in an embedded memory of 12 KB, eliminating continuous host supervision during repeated sequences. The internal DC link is regulated at 160 VDC, derived from a nominal input of 120 VAC at 50/60 Hz. Motor windings can be supplied with up to 8.0 A RMS in continuous service or 11.3 A peak, providing added acceleration headroom during demanding motion profiles. Logic circuits draw 450 mA from the 5 V rail, and sixteen optically isolated user inputs with twelve sourcing outputs simplify wiring to limit switches, relays, and indicator lamps without external interface boards.
