Product Description:
The 05.P1.13X-003U is a permanent-magnet brake assembly manufactured by KEB for the P1 Encoders and Brakes series. When paired with a motor or reducer, the unit mechanically clamps the shaft once supply power is removed, preventing drift and protecting nearby tooling. This braking method is commonly used in pick-and-place arms, hoists, and indexing tables where controlled stopping and secure static positioning are required. Because the brake engages when electrical power is unavailable, it can hold the connected shaft during a power interruption. Its operating principle also supports applications in which a stationary load must remain secured for extended periods.
At a nominal coil voltage of 24 VDC, the brake can remain energized continuously. The winding has a 100% duty rating, allowing continuous energization without overheating the assembly under the stated operating conditions. Initial seating of the friction surfaces, also known as burnishing, is completed in 1 s at 25 RPM. This brief conditioning run establishes proper contact between the friction surfaces before regular operation. The enclosure has an IP20 rating, which protects against finger contact but does not provide protection against liquids. The brake is therefore intended for a sheltered cabinet or protected motor-frame location. It operates without oil or grease on the friction faces, which prevents lubricants from reducing the available holding force.
When the brake is de-energized, a permanent-magnet ring attracts the armature disk and clamps the shaft. Applying current produces an opposing magnetic field that separates the friction surfaces, providing an electromagnetic release action that functions in any mounting orientation. Precise clearances help control residual drag after release. The standard air gap is 0.2 mm, while wear can increase the gap to a maximum of 0.5 mm before adjustment is required. Dimensional tolerances maintain magnetic alignment, with a 0.1 mm magnet-to-armature offset and a 0.05 mm shaft-to-magnet offset limiting eccentricity and vibration. Regular gap inspection helps preserve consistent engagement and release behavior as the friction surfaces wear during repeated operating cycles.
