Product Description:
The 05.P1.120-1117 is a permanent-magnet safety brake produced by KEB as part of the P1 Encoders and Brakes series. Designed for integration with servo, stepper, or induction motors, the assembly clamps the rotating shaft whenever control power is removed and prevents uncommanded motion. Its compact flange mount and internal hub allow the brake to fit directly behind motor feedback devices, giving automated handling equipment, gantry axes, and vertical lifts a dependable holding function that is independent of drive torque.
The working clearance between the magnet and armature, designated as Air Gap X, is set at 0.2 mm; maintaining this distance ensures the rated attraction force is available at every stop. Mechanical wear may increase that gap toward the permissible maximum of 0.5 mm, at which point torque drops and service is required. Continuous energization is allowed because the coil has a duty cycle of 100%, so temperature rise does not require pause intervals. The enclosure carries an ingress protection rating of IP20, providing protection against finger contact but requiring placement inside a sheltered housing. To avoid uneven magnetic flux, radial misalignment between the magnet and armature must not exceed 0.1 mm; keeping within this limit reduces residual drag during release.
The permitted shaft-to-magnet eccentricity is 0.05 mm, a tolerance that guides tooling accuracy for couplings and spacers. Installation uses a flange-mounted configuration, and the round flange distributes the load uniformly around the bolt circle. The braking element is keyed to the shaft through an internal hub to minimize the overhung length. Holding force is produced by a permanent magnet, while release is achieved by an opposing electromagnetic field energized through a two-lead cable with fixed polarity: red is positive, and black is negative. Dry operation eliminates oil mist, supports use in cleanroom environments, and prevents torque loss caused by lubricant migration.
