Product Description:
The 03.P1.23X-002U is a shaft brake manufactured by KEB and placed in the P1 Encoders and Brakes series. It attaches to the non-drive end of a motor shaft to hold the rotor when electrical power is removed, preventing unintended motion in automated machinery. Units in this series are sized to share mounting patterns with feedback devices, allowing machine builders to stack components without increasing the overall length. In industrial automation, the brake improves safety on vertical axes, conveyors, and light machine tools that require controlled stopping and secure parking.
For correct torque development, the factory sets an initial air gap of 0.15 mm between the permanent magnet and the steel armature; this gap must be preserved for reliable engagement. A duty time of 100% allows the coil to remain continuously energized during extended cycles without thermal derating. Because the brake engages through a permanent magnet field, it defaults to the locked state whenever supply power is absent, delivering fail-safe holding capability. The enclosure carries an IP20 rating, so installation inside a protected enclosure is required. Wear is monitored against a maximum permissible air gap of 0.4 mm; exceeding this value compromises magnetic attraction and lengthens response time. The assembly tolerates up to 0.1 mm of axial offset between the magnet carrier and the armature plate, minimizing shim requirements during mounting.
Radial concentricity must keep the shaft centerline within 0.05 mm of the magnet bore to avoid side loading that would increase noise and reduce torque repeatability. The brake is designed for a dry operating environment, so oil and grease must not contaminate the friction surfaces. Release occurs through an electromagnetic coil that counteracts the permanent field and lifts the armature clear within a few milliseconds, enabling a rapid restart of the driven axis. Performance remains stable within the stated safe ambient temperature range of 0 °C to 40 °C. Operation outside this range can alter the magnetic strength and insulation resistance.
