This arrangement lets the drive vary motor speed to match process demand instead of running the connected motor only at line frequency.
Its line side accepts a three-phase supply and draws a nominal input current of 6.4 A. Pulse-width modulation is performed at a carrier frequency of 4 kHz, balancing acoustic noise with switching loss.
