Product Description:
The 08.03.822-100U is a spring-applied safety brake manufactured by KEB within the Combistop Spring Brakes series. In automated machinery, the unit clamps a motor shaft whenever power is removed, supplying a mechanical holding force that prevents unintended motion during standby or emergency stops. The spring mechanism applies the brake without electrical power, while an electromagnetic assembly releases it when the appropriate voltage is supplied. The brake can be integrated with servo axes, conveyors, or vertical lifts to provide a passive layer of protection that complements electronic drive control.
During AC operation, the brake begins releasing after an energization delay of 700 ms, which indicates how long the shaft remains locked after voltage is applied. The armature reaches full magnetic attraction in 900 ms, completing the AC release process before unrestricted shaft movement resumes. An initial air gap of 0.4 mm separates the friction surfaces, and wear or incorrect assembly that widens this gap can increase the reaction time. The permissible frictional operating speed is 1500 rpm, which helps keep thermal loading within the capacity of the friction lining. Allowable lining wear is limited to 5.0 mm, so maintenance must occur before this amount of material is lost. Monitoring the air gap and lining condition helps preserve consistent engagement behavior during repeated operating cycles.
Alignment is maintained by limiting the deviation between the mounting face and hub to 0.08 mm, reducing eccentric loading on the driven element. Fastening strength relies on ISO class 8.8 screws installed through the flange, and three M8 × 90 screws are required. Mounting eccentricity must not exceed 0.5 mm to prevent uneven contact between the friction surfaces. The brake can complete up to five cycles per minute in standard Sc1 service and up to 10 cycles per minute in higher-frequency Sc2 duty without overheating. Its DC engagement time is 180 ms, providing faster brake application when operated with direct-current switching. The friction lining must remain at least 11.0 mm thick to maintain suitable spring force and braking performance throughout service.
