The 023811X-001U is a spring-applied electromagnetic brake produced by KEB for the Combistop Spring Brakes series. It holds a load when control voltage is absent, allowing rotary or linear axes to remain stationary during power loss or emergency stop events in industrial automation equipment. The compact unit couples its friction lining to the machine shaft without external linkages, simplifying installation on servo motors, compact gearboxes, and small conveyor drives that require secure static positioning. Its spring-applied design provides holding force without relying on continuous electrical power.
The brake consumes 25 W of operating power while the direct-current coil is energized to release the friction lining. When the coil is de-energized, spring force applies the brake and clamps the connected shaft. A factory-set nominal air gap of 0.2 mm supports full holding torque with the intended coil current, while the service limit is reached at a maximum air gap of 0.4 mm. The air gap can be monitored with a feeler gauge as the lining wears. The brake has a release time of 40 ms from coil energization to lining separation. An angular deviation tolerance of 0.04 mm and a bolt-circle eccentricity of 0.2 mm help keep the hub concentric with the shaft. The hub counterbore is limited to 0.5 mm so the spline remains properly centered. Installation requires four M4×40 screws, and the friction element can remain in service until wear reaches 2.0 mm.
The permitted operating temperature extends from -40 °C to 120 °C, while the recommended range for continuous duty is 0 °C to 40 °C. The coil is supplied by a nominal DC source, providing the direct-current input required for brake release. Lining thickness must remain above the 5.5 mm minimum to preserve reliable engagement when electrical power is interrupted. Once the permitted wear limit is reached, the lining must be replaced to maintain the required holding performance. The controlled hub position and mounting tolerances support installation without additional shimming or alignment work.
