The 175G5502 soft starter is produced by Danfoss as part of the MCD Soft Starters series. It is installed between the mains supply and a three-phase induction motor to apply a controlled voltage ramp, limiting mechanical stress and lowering inrush current during startup. The device also manages smooth deceleration, providing a compact means of coordinating motor acceleration and deceleration across conveyors, pumps, and other loads that benefit from gradual torque application.
The control terminals accept 24 V AC or DC, allowing the unit to share the low-voltage rail used by PLC I/O. When that supply is present, the input draws 8 mA and provides a 24 V DC auxiliary output capable of delivering 200 mA for pilot lamps or sensors. The housing carries an IP20 rating, which provides protection against accidental finger contact but does not provide protection from liquid ingress. The power electronics are rated for an IEC prospective short-circuit current of 65 kA, and the spacing within the starter supports an impulse withstand voltage of 4 kV between the control and power sections. For an inside-delta connection, the thyristor stack handles 65 A, while the insulation distances make the device suitable for systems operating at up to 690 V AC.
The gate-drive circuitry limits the maximum control output to 2.8 A, preventing external contact coils from overloading the circuit. The main SCR path carries a continuous rated current of 43 A, matching typical 15 kW motors operating at 400 V. The semiconductor has an I²t withstand value of 10,500 A²s, so upstream fuses must clear faults before the energy exceeds this limit. A changeover relay rated for 10 A at 250 V AC can signal running status or energize a bypass contactor. All power lugs require a tightening torque of 4 Nm. Thermal protection trips when the connected motor thermistor rises above 3.6 kΩ, working with the unit’s 50 A inline full-load current setting to protect the installation.
