The 178B2094 decentralized frequency converter is produced by Danfoss for the FCD 300 Micro Drives series. Intended for motor control in processing applications, the unit mounts directly on the machine and varies the speed of small-frame induction motors used on conveyors, mixers, or dosing equipment. Locating the power electronics near the load reduces centralized cabinet wiring and shortens the connections between the converter and motor. The drive provides regulated torque and speed for automated lines where motors are distributed across production equipment.
The housing carries an IP66 rating that seals out dust and high-pressure water jets, allowing washdown cleaning without an additional enclosure. It accepts a three-phase 380–480 V supply and delivers up to 1.1 kW of output power to the motor. Network integration is handled through PROFIBUS DP V0/V1 at 3 Mbaud, allowing the converter to exchange parameters, operating commands, and status information with a PLC over a shielded fieldbus cable. Conducted radio-frequency emissions are limited by an internal 1 A RFI filter, reducing the need for a separate line filter in most installations. The sealed enclosure and integrated communication interface support direct installation on exposed processing equipment while keeping control connections accessible through the network.
The drive has an extended configuration with a brake, providing a built-in brake transistor and relay output for controlled stopping of high-inertia loads. The brake transistor helps manage regenerative energy produced when a connected motor decelerates rapidly. Wiring enters through premolded cable glands because the converter has no terminal box, simplifying cable entry and preserving the sealed housing design. The unit has no local display, so operating adjustments and parameter changes are performed through the fieldbus or a remote keypad. This arrangement allows the converter to remain closed during routine operation and reduces the need for direct access at the machine. A standard factory coating protects the metal surfaces from exposure to typical industrial atmospheres without requiring a specialized finish.
