The 178B2091 decentralized frequency converter is produced by Danfoss within the FCD 300 Micro Drives series. As an FCD 300 unit, it mounts close to the motor and converts three-phase mains power into variable-frequency output for conveyors, mixers, and other motion applications commonly found in processing lines. Its compact housing allows installation directly on equipment where cabinet space is limited or long motor cables are impractical.
This drive accepts a three-phase supply of 3 × 380–480 V, covering common industrial low-voltage networks. At these supply levels, its motor output is rated at 0.75 kW, which corresponds to a mechanical shaft capability of 1.0 HP. The IP66 enclosure protects the electronics against dust ingress and high-pressure washdown, allowing the unit to operate on open plant floors without additional shielding. Communication with supervisory controllers is handled through PROFIBUS DP V0/V1 at 3 Mbaud. Speed references, operating commands, and diagnostic data can therefore be exchanged over the same network used by other sensors and actuators. The decentralized design reduces the need to route motor power cables over long distances between a central control cabinet and the driven equipment.
Electromagnetic compatibility on the motor leads is improved by the built-in integral 1A RFI filter, eliminating the need for an external RFI module in most installations. Extended support includes a 24 V external supply that keeps fieldbus communication active during mains outages, allowing orderly shutdown sequences. The housing has no display, so operating data and commands are accessed through the connected control system rather than a local screen. Wiring is simplified by the lack of a terminal box, which reduces the number of separate components mounted around the drive. A standard protective coating is applied to the internal circuit boards to resist ambient moisture and chemical vapors commonly found in processing environments. Installing the converter near the motor also shortens power-cable routes and reduces the amount of equipment required inside the central cabinet.
