The P4170 temperature controller is manufactured by Danaher as part of the Thermal Controllers series. This plug-in instrument installs in a panel cutout to read a process variable and issue step commands to two matched valves, thereby keeping industrial heating or cooling loops at the setpoint. It is used in ovens, tanks, and environmental chambers where precise thermal stability is required without dedicating a full PLC channel. By embedding self-tuning routines and local alarms, the unit performs closed-loop regulation while minimizing wiring and cabinet space.
The controller occupies a 1/4-DIN footprint and has a 96 × 96 mm bezel that aligns with the 92 × 92 mm panel opening. Its input circuit is updated at 4 samples/s, giving the algorithm enough data for fast disturbance rejection. Temperature adjustment is calculated by the Three-Point Stepping VMD scheme, which drives two identical valve outputs through open, close, or hold pulses. Operators can engage pretune or self-tune routines so loop gains are calculated automatically, and two process alarms provide alerts when limits are breached. The front membrane, keypad, and display are sealed to IP66, and the process value readout remains within ±5% of the span. Field connections are made through screw-type terminals. The plug-in housing clips directly into the support sleeve.
Only 100 mm of depth is required behind the panel, allowing installation in shallow enclosures. The housing carries a 4X NEMA rating for resistance to washdown chemicals and airborne contaminants. Reliable operation is supported at altitudes up to 2000 m. At just 0.21 kg, the device adds minimal load to lightweight panel doors. Plug-in mounting secures the controller in its support sleeve, while the single-board layout keeps internal wiring clear of the ventilation path. These features allow the controller to fit into compact industrial control panels while maintaining access to its front keypad, display, and alarm functions.
