The SS451LG4 is a geared synchronous stepping motor built by Danaher for the Slo-Syn Synchronous Motors series. The unit combines a permanent-magnet rotor with an integral gear reducer. This arrangement allows control systems in indexing tables, conveyors, or packaging stations to position loads without external feedback devices.
The motor connects directly to a single-phase supply at 120 VAC and draws 0.80 A under rated conditions; a 14 µF phase-shifting capacitor is wired in series to create the quadrature phase needed for step generation. A helical gear train provides a 4:1 reduction, and hardened steel components keep gearbox efficiency at 88%. This ratio multiplies the electromagnetic torque, allowing a maximum output of 5000 oz-in while maintaining a minimum holding torque of 1584 oz-in for static applications. The drive permits 77 lb-in² of reflected load inertia, allowing controllers to accelerate loads without losing synchronism. Input shaft lost motion is limited to 7°, and the reducer confines output backlash to 2°, which supports repeatable positioning when direction reversals occur.
With the reduction in place, the shaft turns at a rated speed of 18 rpm, making the motor suitable for slow, high-torque duties such as screw jacks or rotary valves. The shaft measures 0.500 in in diameter and extends at least 1.10 in, giving couplings adequate engagement length without requiring keyway modifications. Tapered roller bearings permit an axial thrust of 100 lb. The same bearing set withstands up to 150 lb of radial load, allowing sprockets or pulleys to be mounted with an overhung load without auxiliary supports. The controlled backlash supports repeatable movement, while the reduced shaft speed provides increased torque for industrial positioning applications.
