The SS250B is a synchronous stepping motor produced by Danaher for the Slo-Syn Synchronous Motors series. Designed for fixed-frequency operation, the unit synchronizes its rotor with the sinusoidal mains waveform and advances in uniform increments that can be counted for open-loop positioning. It is used in compact indexing stations, chart recorders, and metering pumps where slow, repeatable shaft rotation is required without an encoder or tachometer. The motor provides controlled movement for applications that operate at a constant line frequency and do not require variable-speed electronics.
The motor turns at a rated speed of 72 rpm, providing the slow shaft movement required by indexing and metering equipment. A minimum running torque of 250 oz-in is available across the operating speed range, enabling the motor to drive moderate loads without additional gearing. The winding is intended for a single-phase source at 120 V AC, and the energized coils draw 0.6 A at this voltage. The utility line frequency of 60 Hz governs rotational velocity and step timing, eliminating the need for electronic commutation. The drive circuitry incorporates a 6.5 µF capacitor and a 150 Ω, 50 W series resistor to shape the current and limit inrush. This network supports smooth pull-in with 0.12 oz-in-s² of reflected inertia on the shaft while keeping the motor’s temperature rise within operating limits.
The motor permits an axial thrust of 50 lb and a radial shaft load of 25 lb, allowing direct connection to lead screws or sprockets without auxiliary bearings.
