Internal Product Review

The SS242LG5 is a Danaher Slo-Syn synchronous motor with a 5:1 gear ratio and 240 VAC operation. Minimum torque of 1056 oz-in and gearbox efficiency of 88% give the assembly strong low-speed drive performance. A 150 lb radial load capacity makes the SS242LG5 a very capable choice for geared motion applications.

Product Description:

The SS242LG5 is a gear-reduced synchronous stepping motor manufactured by Danaher for the Slo-Syn Synchronous Motors series. The unit combines a permanent-magnet motor with an integral spur gearbox to deliver incremental motion at very low speeds. It is suitable for indexing tables, labeling heads, and other positioning axes that must lock precisely between steps in automated machinery.

The motor runs from a single-phase 240 VAC supply and transfers power through a 5:1 reduction that multiplies stall torque while reducing shaft speed. The gear train operates at 88% efficiency, so most of the mechanical input from the motor is delivered through the output shaft. Minimum continuous torque reaches 1056 oz-in, allowing the motor to drive high-moment loads without external gearing. Under 50 Hz excitation, the shaft turns at 12 RPM. The load inertia rating at this frequency is 22 lb-in², supporting controlled acceleration within the motor’s step accuracy range. Mechanical compliance includes 8 degrees of input-shaft lost motion ahead of the gearbox and 2 degrees of backlash at the output shaft, both of which affect positioning repeatability.

At 60 Hz, the output speed increases to 14.4 RPM, and the permissible load inertia rises to 55 lb-in². The reflected rotor inertia is 0.021 lb-in², helping the motor maintain stable dynamic behavior under the permitted load. The gearbox supports axial forces up to 100 lb and radial side loads up to 150 lb, allowing it to withstand vertical thrust and belt tension without separate bearings. Installation space is conserved by a 1.19 in body length behind the faceplate and a total assembly length of 3.91 in. The 3.88 in bolt circle accommodates common NEMA mounting arrangements. Cams, lead screws, or timing pulleys can be coupled directly to the output when their applied loads remain within the gearbox limits.
