Product Description:

The XTL-230-40-S is a servo drive module produced by Copley Controls as part of the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It sits between a motion controller and a three-phase motor, generating PWM power while sampling phase currents and position feedback. By embedding the current, velocity, and position regulators, the module delivers deterministic axis control for pick-and-place stations, packaging machinery, and articulated robots. Operating from a single-phase power supply, it supports distributed architectures in which each axis carries its own amplifier, minimizing cabinet wiring and simplifying connections between the controller, drive, and motor.

Analog command inputs are digitized with a 12-bit converter, and the 74.8 kΩ input impedance minimizes loading on digital-to-analog converters. The power stage delivers a continuous output current of 20 Adc and can surge to 40 Adc for up to 1 s to start loads; input current during these events is limited by a single-phase rating of 20.0 Arms. Control power for the logic rails is limited to 500 mA, permitting the use of small auxiliary supplies. Motor selection must account for the minimum line-to-line inductance of 200 µH so the current regulator remains stable during operation. A sine/cosine encoder can be read at a line frequency of up to 230 kHz. The drive also supplies the encoder with +5 VDC at up to 400 mA.

The current loop operates at 15 kHz, while the PWM hardware enforces a minimum pulse width of 220 ns to maintain linear duty-cycle control. Digital position data can be accepted at rates of up to 2 MHz, and internal velocity and position calculations refresh at 3 kHz for smooth motion profiling. When a sine/cosine encoder is used, hardware interpolation produces 1,024 counts per cycle. The module can simultaneously output quadrature encoder emulation at 16,384 counts per revolution for downstream controllers, eliminating the need for an external interpolator or signal splitter.
