The XTL-230-40 is a compact servo drive module manufactured by Copley Controls within the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Designed for panel mounting, the unit converts AC mains power into controlled motor currents and supervises both current and velocity loops, supplying precise actuation for industrial robots, gantries, and automated inspection stages. Separate logic and power inputs support deterministic operation, while the unit’s small footprint allows dense multi-axis layouts inside machine frames. By accepting analog or digital command sources, it fits into PLC-based or standalone architectures.
The power stage delivers a continuous output of 20 A DC and can rise to 40 A DC for transient demands that last no longer than 1 second, allowing rapid acceleration without thermal overload. These current pulses are produced by a current loop that refreshes at 15 kHz, so torque commands are reproduced with minimal phase lag even on low-inductance windings. Incoming analog references are digitized at 12-bit resolution, giving 4,096 discrete levels for speed or torque commands and supporting the precision required by pick-and-place and vision-guided axes. Control electronics draw up to 500 mA from the isolated logic supply, separating sensitive signals from the higher-voltage motor bus.
The drive’s command input presents an impedance of 74.8 kΩ, so most motion controllers can source the signal without loading errors. Motor leads must exhibit at least 200 µH of line-to-line inductance for stable current regulation, a threshold that covers most medium-frame brushless servomotors. For position feedback, the onboard interpolator can recreate encoder signals at 16,384 counts per revolution, simplifying upgrades from analog resolvers to digital networks. The chassis measures 7.55 inches tall, 5.57 inches wide, and 2.55 inches deep, and it weighs only 3.0 lb, supporting vertical panel mounting without heavy brackets. The single-phase mains input draws up to 20 A RMS, while the three-phase input is limited to 15.4 A RMS, allowing cabinet wiring to be matched to the available supply capacity.
