Product Description:

The XTL-230-18 is a servo drive from Copley Controls that belongs to the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. This module supplies regulated current to brushed or brushless motor axes, closes the control loops onboard, and provides brake power, making it suitable for precision motion stages and automated handling equipment. By combining power electronics with high-speed signal processing, the drive converts host commands into accurately timed PWM pulses while simultaneously reading incremental or emulated encoder feedback for precise industrial positioning tasks.

A continuous output of 6 Adc supports steady-state motion, while a peak capability of 18 Adc is available for short accelerations lasting up to 1 s. The current loop runs at 15 kHz, so torque corrections occur every 66 µs, and each PWM pulse can be as narrow as 220 ns, allowing fine duty-cycle resolution. The drive also provides a 0.5 Adc brake output for holding vertical loads, and its internal supply draws no more than 500 mA of control power. Twelve optically isolated digital inputs accommodate limit switches or homing sensors, while the velocity-position processor supports motion updates at 3 kHz. For incremental feedback, the quadrature encoder interface accepts 2 million lines per second, while the digital position port operates at 2 MHz. A +5 Vdc, 400 mA encoder rail powers external sensors without requiring an auxiliary supply.

On the mains side, the module draws up to 10.1 Arms from a single-phase source or 6.4 Arms from a three-phase source, providing flexibility in cabinet power distribution. Motor windings must have a minimum line-to-line inductance of 200 µH so the switching stage remains stable across the full speed range. When a resolver is not used, the drive can synthesize high-resolution feedback at 16,384 counts/rev for interpolated position control. The remaining I/O includes twelve programmable outputs for drive-ready, warning, and fault signals, supporting direct integration with PLC safety chains and machine control circuits.
