The XSL-230-40-RHS motor drive module is manufactured by Copley Controls and belongs to the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It operates as a digital loop amplifier that converts low-level control references into synchronized three-phase outputs for brushless or brushed motors used in industrial robots, indexing tables, and electronic manufacturing equipment. The module also manages regenerative energy produced during deceleration, allowing machines to cycle rapidly without external braking resistors.
The power stage is a three-phase IGBT inverter sized for 20 Adc of continuous motor current, allowing the drive to support medium-torque servomotors without overheating. Short accelerations are handled by a peak current of 40 Adc that can be sustained for 1 s before foldback limits engage. A regenerative channel returns surplus energy to the DC bus at up to 4 kW, while 1760 µF of internal capacitance stabilizes the bus during load transients. The drive can sink 1 A through its brake output, and reliable commutation is maintained when the motor has a minimum line-to-line inductance of 400 µH. Command inputs enter through a 12-bit analog port, and the power section modulates the phases with a PWM ripple component centered at 30 kHz.
On the control side, the pulse decoder tracks position commands up to 2 MHz, matching high-speed indexers without losing counts. Phase switching is updated at an output PWM frequency of 15 kHz, which balances acoustic noise and limits current ripple. For feedback, the resolver interface measures shaft angle with 14 bits of resolution, supports carrier excitation at 7.5 kHz, and preserves accuracy at speeds up to 10,000 rpm. The module is supplied with a finned aluminum heat sink and weighs only 4.8 lb, easing placement in dense control cabinets.
