Internal Product Review

The XSL-230-40-R is a Copley Controls XENUS digital loop module built around a 3-phase IGBT inverter with a 20 Adc continuous current rating. A 15 kHz current loop rate and 2 MHz digital position rate make this unit especially sharp and responsive in demanding motion applications. The 4 kW continuous regeneration capacity is a standout advantage for dynamic axes with frequent deceleration.

Product Description:

The XSL-230-40-R is a digital servo amplifier manufactured by Copley Controls for the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It converts power from a common DC bus into three-phase motor power while executing high-bandwidth current, velocity, and position regulation for multi-axis machinery. During deceleration, regenerative circuitry directs excess energy away from the DC bus and helps prevent an overvoltage condition. Control is provided by an integrated IGBT stage coupled with onboard regenerative circuitry.

The power stage uses an IGBT inverter that can supply a continuous armature current of 20 Adc. For acceleration or impact loads, the amplifier delivers up to 40 Adc for 1 s before returning to its continuous rating. Current is modulated at a PWM carrier frequency of 15 kHz, and the internal current loop operates at the same frequency to minimize ripple. Safe switching is supported by a minimum pulse width of 220 ns, while a 30 kHz ripple component should be considered when planning electromagnetic interference controls. The connected motor must provide at least 400 µH of line-to-line inductance to filter these pulses. A separate logic rail draws 500 mA, while the inverter can direct up to 4 kW of regenerative power into external absorbers to prevent excessive DC-bus voltage. Maximum mains current is limited to 20 Arms when the module is connected to an AC front end.

The control interface accepts digital position commands at up to 2 MHz, allowing it to process signals from high-resolution encoders without losing pulse edges. A dedicated encoder power rail supplies 400 mA, and the brake output can sink 1 A to control a holding brake for a vertical axis during shutdown. The internal bus includes 1760 µF of capacitance, which stores energy for sudden current demands and helps stabilize the bus during rapid changes in motor load.
