The XSL-230-40 digital loop module is produced by Copley Controls as part of the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Designed for high-bandwidth motion platforms, the board plugs into a host amplifier chassis and closes the current, velocity, and position loops required to operate brushless and stepper motors. In automated assembly cells, the module interprets trajectory data from PLCs or fieldbus masters and drives the associated power stage so that actuators follow commanded profiles with low following error.
For continuous operation, the control chain permits 20 A DC of motor phase current, while acceleration or cutting moves can draw up to 40 A DC for a maximum of 1 s without thermal foldback. Incoming position references are interpolated at 2 MHz, and the quadrature encoder channel accepts feedback edges up to 5 MHz on each differential line, enabling submicron resolution on fast linear stages. The modulator clocks the power transistors at a 30 kHz PWM switching frequency, placing switching noise above most mechanical resonance bands and simplifying output filtering.
Support circuitry maintains stable power and manages regenerated energy. A bulk capacitance of 1760 µF on the DC bus limits voltage sag during regenerative deceleration. When the bus rises to +390 V DC, an internal monitor activates the brake controller so excess energy can be directed to an external resistor. The braking network supports 4 kW of continuous dissipation, allowing repetitive operations such as palletizing drops or high-speed indexing without shutdown. Additional provisions include a 5 V encoder supply rated for 400 mA, a logic input current of 500 mA, a mains current draw of 20 A RMS, a minimum brake resistance of 15 Ω, and a minimum motor inductance of 400 µH to keep current ripple within control limits.
