Internal Product Review

The XSL-230-36-R is a Copley Controls digital loop module well suited for high-response servo control, with a 15 kHz current loop rate and 3 kHz velocity loop rate. The 12 Adc continuous current and 36 Adc peak current give this unit strong drive capability under changing loads. The 14-bit resolver resolution at up to 10,000 rpm makes this module an excellent fit for precise motion applications.

Product Description:

The XSL-230-36-R is a compact digital servo amplifier manufactured by Copley Controls for the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Mounted alongside motion controllers, it converts DC-bus energy derived from three-phase mains into precise phase currents so brushless or voice-coil motors can follow commanded torque, velocity, and position profiles. In industrial automation, it closes high-bandwidth current and velocity loops that keep axes synchronized during pick-and-place operations, electronic assembly, and laboratory test cycles.

Continuous output is limited to 12 A DC, allowing the drive to hold load torque indefinitely without overheating. For rapid moves, it supports a burst rating of 36 A DC, providing additional motor torque until thermal limits are approached. The current loop executes at 15 kHz, while the power stage switches at a 30 kHz PWM frequency that lowers audible noise and reduces motor heating. All control electronics and bus capacitors are packaged inside a housing that measures 7.55 × 5.57 × 2.57 in, allowing the unit to fit into dense multi-axis cabinets.

Peak current can be sustained for 1 s before the controller returns to continuous operation, and the internal heat sink dissipates 75 W when the supply is 240 V AC. A 1,760 µF DC-bus capacitor bank stores energy, while a minimum line-to-line load inductance of 400 µH and a 3 kHz velocity loop help control current ripple. During braking, surplus energy is sent to an external resistor; the module handles 4 kW of continuous regenerative power and 10 kW of peak regenerative power when resistance remains above 15 Ω. Resolver feedback supports motor speeds up to 10,000 rpm with a 7.5 kHz carrier. Resolver interpolation provides a position resolution of 14 bits, supporting smooth closed-loop motion.
