The XSL-230-18 belongs to the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series produced by Copley Controls. This module is designed to close high-bandwidth current, velocity, or position loops for servo systems, acting as the power stage that interfaces between a motion controller and a three-phase motor. By modulating DC bus energy and processing high-speed position commands, it regulates torque and motion profiles in automated assembly lines, semiconductor tools, and packaging machinery.
The drive delivers a continuous output of 6 A DC, providing steady armature current for normal duty cycles. When rapid acceleration is required, it can supply a peak of 18 A DC for up to 1 s, after which thermal limits reduce the current to the continuous value. Line-side conductors must accommodate 15 A RMS, the maximum mains draw at full load. Command data can be streamed over the digital bus at 2 MHz, allowing sub-microsecond position updates to be translated into pulse-width-modulated switching. The logic electronics are supported by a 24 V rail that can supply up to 500 mA. A 1760 µF nominal DC bus capacitor stabilizes the power section, smooths rectified mains power, and reduces ripple during transients.
The drive uses a switching frequency of 30 kHz, limiting ripple current in the motor windings and keeping acoustic noise above the audible range. Winding protection requires a minimum line-to-line inductance of 400 µH, since a lower inductance could allow excessive current changes that stress the output devices. Regeneration begins when the bus rises to +390 V DC and diverts energy into an external resistor. Peak dissipation reaches 5 kW if the load decelerates abruptly. Supporting components include a brake resistor with a minimum rating of 30 Ω and 25 W, while the continuous dump capability is 2 kW. Regeneration turns off at +380 V DC to prevent repeated switching near the activation threshold. The housing measures 7.55 × 5.57 × 2.57 inches, providing a compact footprint for panel mounting.
