The XSJ-230-10 is a compact digital loop module produced by Copley Controls for the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Acting as an embedded servo amplifier, the unit processes motion commands, closes current and velocity loops, and drives brushless or stepper motors directly from a control backplane. By handling these control tasks onboard, it reduces the processing load on the central PLC and provides deterministic actuation for positioning stages, conveyors, and automated inspection axes in industrial equipment.
The module accepts analog position or torque references that are quantized with a 12-bit converter, providing 4,096 discrete levels of setpoint resolution. A continuous output of 5 Adc supports most low- to mid-power servomotors, while a programmed ceiling of 10 Adc is available for acceleration events without saturating the drive. Current is updated within a 15 kHz control loop, allowing rapid rejection of load disturbances. Feedback from quadrature or serial encoders is decoded at up to 20 Mcount/s, so the controller can maintain accuracy at high shaft speeds. The module provides 14 programmable inputs for assigning homing, limit, and fault functions. The chopping transistors provide PWM control, and the module remains stable with motor windings that have at least 200 µH of inductance.
Four digital outputs report drive status or energize relays, and the velocity regulator executes at 3 kHz to maintain constant speed during process changes. The power bridge produces a PWM ripple component at 30 kHz, which places most associated audible noise beyond the range normally heard outside equipment enclosures. For step-pulse-driven motion, the unit accepts commands at a maximum rate of 1.5 MHz, preventing aliasing in microstepping applications. Protective circuitry removes line energy if the bus voltage rises above 400 Vdc, and thermal monitoring disconnects the power stage when its temperature reaches 70 °C. The module measures 126 × 89 × 53 mm and has a mass of 0.30 kg, helping conserve control-panel space while keeping the installed weight low.
