Product Description:

The XPL-230-40 is a single-axis drive module manufactured by Copley Controls for the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It serves as the current-, velocity-, and position-regulating element in servo systems, translating motion commands into precisely timed switching of the power bridge that energizes a brushless or voice-coil motor. Designed for embedded installation in industrial machinery, the module provides analog, digital, and encoder interfaces so system controllers can close high-bandwidth loops without adding external signal-conditioning hardware.

Two differential analog inputs have an impedance of 5 kΩ and are digitized with 16-bit resolution, supplying fine command granularity for torque or speed control. Fifteen digital inputs and six digital outputs handle limit switches, homing sensors, or drive-enable interlocks, while the digital position input channel accepts step-and-direction pulses at up to 2 MHz. Inside the controller, the current loop executes at 16 kHz, with a cycle time of 62.5 µs, and the velocity and position loops update at 4 kHz, with a cycle time of 250 µs. These rates let the drive react quickly to load disturbances and trajectory changes. A quadrature encoder port supports feedback streams of up to 2 million lines per second. The minimum line-to-line load inductance is 200 µH, which accommodates typical low-iron servo windings.

The power stage delivers a continuous output current of 20 Adc, equivalent to 14.1 Arms, and can source or sink up to 40 Adc, equivalent to 28.3 Arms, for bursts lasting 1 second. This temporary current capacity provides additional torque during acceleration or recovery from sudden load changes. On a 115/230 VAC single-phase supply, the mains current draw is limited to 20.0 Arms, while a 500 mA control-power rail keeps the logic active during brief voltage drops. Gate signals are formed by a carrier frequency that can reach 100 kHz. A minimum pulse width of 220 ns maintains accurate duty cycles even at high modulation indexes. The high carrier frequency also helps reduce audible motor noise and current ripple during operation.
