The XPL-230-36 is a digital servo drive module produced by Copley Controls as part of the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It supplies closed-loop current, velocity, and position control for brushless or brushed servomotors used in factory automation, packaging lines, and material-handling systems. By combining a power stage and motion-processing logic on one board, the module interfaces with higher-level motion controllers to translate command signals into regulated motor torque.

During normal operation, the module delivers a continuous phase current of 12 A DC; for acceleration bursts, it can supply 36 A DC for up to one second. The current regulator operates at 16 kHz, so torque commands are applied with submillisecond latency. Pulse-width modulation is generated at a maximum carrier frequency of 100 kHz, while individual gate pulses can be as short as 220 ns, allowing precise voltage control even on low-inductance windings. The design supports a minimum line-to-line load inductance of 200 µH. Its power section accommodates phase currents controlled through a single PWM bridge or three-phase vector modulation.

Input power can be provided from a single-phase source drawing up to 20.0 A RMS or from a three-phase source limited to 10.4 A RMS, allowing the same module to fit both lower-power and higher-power cabinets. A separate control supply requires only 500 mA, keeping the control logic active during emergency stops. The board provides two 16-bit analog inputs, one 12-bit analog output, fifteen digital inputs, and six digital outputs for sensor feedback and handshake signals. For position capture, it accepts quadrature encoder feedback at rates up to 2 million lines per second; step-and-direction positioning commands can be received at 2 MHz. Commanded motion is synchronized with a 16-bit trajectory planner, while PWM updates remain independent through the fast current-control loop.
