The XPL-230-18 belongs to the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series manufactured by Copley Controls. It is a compact digital loop module used to power and regulate brushless or voice-coil actuators in automated machinery, combining current, velocity, and position control in one unit for fast, deterministic motion profiles. Separate velocity and position loops update at 4 kHz, keeping feedback processing synchronized with encoder data while leaving bandwidth margin for supervisory tasks.
The current loop inside the module closes at 16 kHz, so corrective torque commands are refreshed every 62.5 µs. For continuous operation, the drive supplies 6 Adc, while transient demands can be met with a peak of 18 Adc during a 1-second surge. A minimum line-to-line load inductance of 200 µH prevents excessive ripple when those currents are switched through the motor windings. The internal PWM stage can generate pulses as short as 220 ns, allowing fine duty-cycle resolution even at elevated switching frequencies. An analog monitor port provides a ±5 Vdc range so external equipment can observe real-time variables such as velocity or following error without loading the digital bus.
On the mains side, a single-phase source draws up to 10.1 Arms, while connecting the same unit to a three-phase supply reduces the draw to 6.4 Arms. Position commands arriving over differential lines are accepted at a rate of 2 MHz, matching high-resolution encoders used in semiconductor and metrology tools. Regenerative energy is diverted once the DC bus reaches 390 Vdc, keeping it below the 400 Vdc absolute limit for overvoltage protection. Fifteen optically isolated digital inputs and six sourcing outputs allow direct connections to limit switches, other drives, or safety relays. All electronics fit within a 7.92 × 5.51 × 2.31 in package, simplifying panel layouts in multi-axis control cabinets.
