The XP2-230-20 is a compact drive module manufactured by Copley Controls within the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Intended for multi-axis automation, the module mounts on a motherboard and governs brushless servomotors or linear coils by closing high-bandwidth current and position loops. It translates motion controller setpoints into pulse-width-modulated power while monitoring the DC bus, thermal status, and feedback devices. This functionality supports precise control in electronic assembly cells, pick-and-place gantries, and life-science instrumentation.
During steady operation, the module delivers a continuous output of 10 A DC, which can be supplied indefinitely without exceeding thermal limits. Short bursts can rise to 20 A DC for up to 1 second, enabling rapid acceleration or force peaks before the protection algorithm intervenes. The power section draws up to 20 A RMS from the mains feed, so cabinet wiring and fusing must be sized accordingly. A current-loop update rate of 16 kHz minimizes phase lag between the command and motor response, improving stiffness in high-gain systems. Pulse-width generation is synchronized to a minimum on-time of 220 ns. The module also accepts step-and-direction references as fast as 2 MHz, allowing it to follow fine motion profiles created by external interpolators.
The input resolution for analog velocity or torque commands is 14 bits, providing one part in 16,384 granularity across the input span. Control wiring is simplified by 22 programmable digital inputs that can be mapped to limit switches, drive enable signals, or high-speed capture functions. The high-voltage bus is protected against line surges up to 400 V DC and shuts down when the supply falls below the 60 V DC undervoltage threshold, preventing erratic regeneration. Continuous current regulation is supported with load inductances as low as 200 µH, while quadrature feedback is decoded at 8 million counts per second for accurate microstepping. The aluminum chassis weighs 1.90 kg, allowing dense installation on motion-control backplanes without adding excessive mass.
