The XML-230-40 is a single-axis drive module manufactured by Copley Controls within the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. Mounted in control cabinets, the module conditions DC-bus energy and closed-loop signals to command brushless or brushed servo motors in automated machinery. By integrating power conversion with high-speed motion control loops, the unit allows OEM builders to position loads precisely while reducing the space and wiring associated with discrete amplifiers. It interfaces directly with 120–240 VAC single-phase mains and a host controller over digital communications, providing a compact solution for pick-and-place, gantry, and packaging axes.
The power stage delivers a continuous output of 20 Adc, enabling sustained torque for medium-frame servomotors. For short bursts, it provides 40 Adc for up to 1 s before reverting to the continuous limit. Current regulation operates at 16 kHz; this fast loop, coupled with a minimum line-to-line load inductance of 200 µH, keeps di/dt within safe ranges. Motion commands are resolved by a digital position processor that accepts steps at 2 MHz, while an outer velocity and position loop refreshes at 4 kHz to maintain tracking accuracy. Gate drivers issue pulses as narrow as 220 ns to shape the PWM waveform. When supplied from single-phase mains, the input can draw up to 20.0 Arms, and the auxiliary logic draws 500 mA without affecting the bus.
Command flexibility is provided by a 16-bit analog input that can be mapped to torque, velocity, or position demand. Incremental and absolute encoder signals are captured at 8 million counts per second, so feedback bandwidth remains above typical machine requirements. A regulated 5 V rail supplies 400 mA for external sensors. Regenerative energy is routed to a shunt when the bus reaches +390 Vdc, and a protective shutdown occurs above +400 Vdc. At the opposite end of the operating range, the logic halts below +60 Vdc to avoid unstable commutation.
