The XM2-230-20 is a compact digital servo drive module produced by Copley Controls within the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It interfaces with motion controllers to generate three-phase motor currents, enabling precise torque and velocity regulation in automated assemblies, packaging lines, and semiconductor tools.
During continuous operation the drive supplies up to 10 Adc to the motor windings through its 3-phase IGBT inverter stage, while temporary load surges are supported by a peak output of 20 Adc that can be sustained for 1 s. The power stage is pulse-width-modulated at 16 kHz; this carrier produces a 32 kHz ripple component that stays outside most servo control bandwidths. To avoid saturating low-inductance coils, Copley specifies a minimum load inductance of 400 µH for connected motors. Thermal limits are enforced by an over-temperature trip point of 80 °C, and the IGBT section is linked to the heatsink so the controller shuts down before critical junction temperatures are reached. Despite these ratings the module weighs only 4.19 lb, allowing dense mounting on DIN rails or backplanes. Together these electrical and thermal parameters define the current-loop performance envelope available to the motion designer.
System integration centers on supply and protection thresholds. The module accepts universal mains input of 100–240 Vac, which is rectified to a high-voltage DC bus monitored for over-voltage at 400 Vdc and under-voltage at 60 Vdc. When regenerated energy from a fast-stopping axis elevates the bus, a brake circuit engages at 390 Vdc and disengages at 380 Vdc to protect internal components while returning the line to nominal. Feedback electronics are powered by a regulated +5 Vdc ±2% rail that can deliver 500 mA for incremental or commutation encoders, maintaining signal integrity without an external supply. These voltage limits, regenerative thresholds, and sensor resources complete the protective framework so the XM2-230-20 can deliver stable closed-loop motion under varying inertia and line conditions.
