The XEL-230-18 is a digital loop module produced by Copley Controls within the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It functions as a compact servo amplifier that closes current loops internally and accepts position or velocity commands from upstream motion controllers in industrial automation systems such as pick-and-place stations and multi-axis gantries. By combining power stages with signal conditioning in a housing that measures 7.92 × 5.51 × 2.31 inches, it installs easily inside control cabinets while delivering field-level drive functions for both rotary and linear motors. This arrangement suits cabinet-based motion platforms that need dedicated motor control without a full standalone drive chassis.
The power section can deliver a continuous output of 6 Adc and tolerate surges up to 18 Adc for 1 s, giving headroom for acceleration events without overheating. A current loop updated at 16 kHz maintains tight regulation, and the gate drive supports a minimum PWM pulse width of 220 ns so switching devices stay within safe conduction limits. Control electronics draw 500 mA of auxiliary power, reducing the burden on cabinet supplies, and a minimum load inductance of 200 µH line to line protects the H-bridge from overcurrent when driving low-impedance coils. The module accepts single-phase mains at 10.1 Arms or three-phase mains at 6.4 Arms, allowing flexible wiring in mixed-voltage plants. Six digital outputs relay status or sequence flags to PLCs, while three analog inputs and a 2 MHz stepper-command port expand motion profile options.
Command scaling begins with 16-bit analog input converters that capture precise setpoints, and actuator feedback can be rebroadcast through a 12-bit analog output for coordinated control of related equipment. These interface channels allow a higher-level controller to compare command and response signals without a separate signal converter. Because current regulation is handled inside the module, the host controller can focus on trajectory generation and supervisory logic. This arrangement is useful in compact multi-axis systems where cabinet space and interface density both matter.
