The R10-230-40 is a servo amplifier module produced by Copley Controls for the XENUS Digital Loop Modules series. It accepts energy from a high-voltage DC bus and drives brushless or brushed servo motors used to position axes in automated assembly cells, material-handling gantries, and other motion platforms. By integrating power stages, regenerative circuitry, and closed-loop control on one board, the module forms the primary interface between a motion controller and the motor windings. This arrangement supports precise torque, velocity, and position control in industrial automation systems.
The module connects to a high-voltage DC bus for motor power. It supplies a continuous motor current of 20 A DC for sustained motion. During brief acceleration periods, it delivers 40 A DC for up to 1 second before returning to the continuous current limit. Input current peaks at 20.0 A RMS, allowing the cabinet wiring and protective devices to be sized for the maximum demand. The bus monitor trips if the voltage exceeds 400 V DC, while regeneration begins near 390 V DC to route excess energy to a dump resistor. The motor circuit requires at least 200 µH of line-to-line inductance to control switching ripple. The housing measures 7.55 × 5.57 × 2.55 inches, withstands shocks up to 40 g, and weighs 3.0 pounds.
The current regulator updates at 15 kHz, while the velocity and position loops refresh at 3 kHz. These update rates allow the drive to follow command trajectories closely and damp mechanical resonances during rapid movement. For step-and-direction systems, the digital position interface accepts edge rates up to 2 MHz. The PWM stage can deliver gate pulses as short as 220 ns, allowing fine adjustments to the output duty cycle. The analog command port has an input impedance of 74.8 kΩ, which minimizes loading on external signal conditioners. The control logic draws no more than 500 mA from its low-voltage supply. Closed-loop regulation supports smooth commutation and stable motor response during high-duty production cycles.
