The STM-075-07 is a compact digital drive from Copley Controls in the Stepnet Compact Drives series. It integrates motor power output, motion profiling, and network communications in one 102.7 × 66.5 × 24.9 mm module for panel or distributed mounting. Within automated machinery, it supplies and regulates current to a stepper motor while exchanging motion commands and status over CANopen, enabling coordinated multi-axis movement without separate amplifiers. Configuration and diagnostics can also be performed through an auxiliary RS-232 port, supporting installation in packaging lines, electronics assembly platforms, and laboratory positioning stages.
On the network side, the drive sustains a data rate of 1 Mbit/s on the CANopen bus, so command latency remains low when many axes share the trunk. The power stage delivers a continuous phase current of 5 A peak and can supply up to 7 A peak for one second to overcome static friction or accelerate inertia. Its current loop closes at 15 kHz, and the position loop refreshes at 3 kHz; these high update frequencies limit following error during rapid transients. The same 15 kHz rate is used as the PWM carrier, while a 30 kHz ripple component smooths the motor winding current. Digital outputs rated at 30 V DC can switch external brakes or contactors, and motion scripts may be uploaded over the 115,200-baud RS-232 service connection.
For feedback devices, the quadrature decoder processes encoder edges at up to 8 million counts per second, allowing high resolution when paired with fine-pitch linear scales or rotary encoders. Open-loop systems can instead transmit step-and-direction pulses at 2 MHz, matching the drive’s command path to rapid indexers. Thermal protection is provided by an overtemperature trip set to 70 °C. The unit also monitors its supply rails and inhibits operation if the bus voltage falls below 20 V DC or rises above 91 V DC. A one-second peak-current timer prevents the drive from maintaining overload current beyond the permitted interval.
