The STL-055-04 is a compact digital drive from Copley Controls that belongs to the Stepnet Compact Drives series. It interfaces with stepper or servo motors in distributed motion systems, translating network commands into phase-modulated current while monitoring feedback and I/O lines. Used on low-voltage DC buses, the unit supplies motion control for small actuators, indexers, or multi-axis platforms where panel space and wiring density are constrained.
The power stage accepts up to 55 Vdc on its DC bus, so it fits battery-based or rectified supplies common on portable or gantry equipment. Under continuous load, the amplifier delivers 3 A peak, and it can surge to 4.5 A peak for transient moves lasting no more than 1 s; this allows quick acceleration without oversizing the supply. A regulated auxiliary rail furnishes 250 mA at 5 V for encoders or sensors, removing the need for an external logic supply. Control loops execute quickly: the current loop updates at 15 kHz and the position loop updates at 3 kHz, while pulse-width modulation also runs at 15 kHz to keep switching noise above the audible band. CANopen traffic is handled at 1 Mbit/s, giving deterministic bus latency in distributed installations.
Twelve optically isolated command lines let the host map discrete functions, and the controller returns status on four digital outputs; the input count of 12 accommodates homing, limits, and user events. Quadrature or SSI feedback is decoded at 8 Mcount/sec, so high-resolution encoders are read without rollover during rapid moves. The pulse-and-direction port accepts step signals up to 2 MHz, matching modern FPGA or microcontroller sources. Thermal protection latches the drive when the internal heat sink reaches 90 °C, and recovery requires a power cycle after the heat sink cools. At only 0.037 kg, the unit adds minimal mass to moving axes, and logic inputs tolerate up to 10 Vdc without damage.
