Product Description:

The ST3-055-04 is a dual-axis stepper drive manufactured by Copley Controls as part of the Stepnet Compact Drives series. Designed for distributed motion systems, it receives step-direction or network commands and produces phased current to operate two hybrid stepper motors. This dual-axis capability supports coordinated positioning in pick-and-place modules, small gantries, and laboratory automation while reducing the number of separate drive modules required for the machine.

Each power stage delivers up to 2 A peak continuously and tolerates surges of 4 A peak for 1 second, allowing the motors to handle short acceleration bursts without requiring an oversized drive. The electrical limit for each axis is 100 W, which is suitable for medium-frame stepper motors used in compact machinery. Torque linearity is maintained because the current loop is refreshed at 15 kHz, while a PWM ripple frequency of 30 kHz places switching artifacts above the motor’s electrical bandwidth. The drive supports motors with phase inductance as low as 200 µH and accepts step input signals at rates up to 250 kHz. A 750 mA DC auxiliary rail can power encoders or sensors, and six sinking digital outputs rated for 250 mA DC can energize brakes or solenoids. Three differential analog inputs accommodate process variables, while the available digital connections support mode selection, limit switches, and other machine signals.

The CANopen interface transmits process data at up to 1 Mbit/s, enabling real-time coordination with PLCs or host computers. A bank of 15 opto-isolated digital inputs provides connections for homing, jogging, limit detection, and machine-safety signals. Encoder feedback is accepted at rates up to 250 kilolines per second, allowing the controller to verify position when high-resolution feedback devices are used. An RS-232 service port provides access to incremental position data and supports direct communication with the drive. The control electronics are contained in an aluminum housing measuring 121 × 70 × 27 mm. Its compact enclosure allows installation near the motors or on moving axes where available cabinet space is limited.

Internal Product Review

  • ‘‘The ST3-055-04 is a compact Stepnet drive from Copley Controls with 100 W output per axis and 2 Apeak continuous current per axis. Fast current regulation at 15 kHz and a 30 kHz PWM ripple frequency support smooth motor control and clean response in motion applications. High I/O density with 15 digital inputs and 6 digital outputs makes the drive a very capable choice for tightly integrated machine designs.’’
