Product Description:
The SP4-055-03 is a compact servo drive module manufactured by Copley Controls within the Stepnet Compact Drives series. Designed for cabinet installation, the unit translates command data from a motion controller into regulated phase current for stepper or brushless motors, enabling closed-loop torque, speed, and positioning functions in pick-and-place systems, semiconductor tooling, and other automated machinery. Its small footprint and flexible network support allow a high axis density in distributed motion architectures.
The drive regulates current at a 12.5 kHz current loop rate, allowing it to correct phase errors before mechanical inertia can react. Twenty-four digital inputs accept limit, home, and user-assigned signals, while eight MOSFET outputs can energize relays or indicators. An integrated incremental encoder port supplies a regulated +5 VDC at up to 500 mA, removing the need for an external sensor supply. The CANopen interface transfers process data at up to 1 Mbit/sec, and the servo remains stable with load inductance as low as 200 µH. Thermal protection stops operation when the heat sink reaches 90 °C. These control and protection functions support responsive operation during continuous motion profiles.
During transients, the power stage can provide a continuous bus current of 12 ADC and a motor winding surge of 3 ADC for the specified one-second peak period, supplying additional acceleration torque without overstressing the power devices. Carrier switching occurs at a 12.5 kHz PWM frequency, and the remaining differential output ripple is centered at 25 kHz to place electromagnetic noise outside most feedback bandwidths. Position updates pass through the servo filters at a 2.5 kHz velocity and position loop rate, while four SPI outputs provide deterministic communication with peripheral sensors. An overvoltage trip threshold of 55 VDC protects the DC link from regenerative energy generated during load deceleration. This threshold causes the drive to stop before excessive bus voltage can damage the power stage.
