Copley Controls manufactures the 800-1543A as part of its Stepnet Compact Drives series. This DC-powered microstepping amplifier is designed for two-phase hybrid stepper motors and uses incremental encoder feedback to close the position loop directly in the drive. By modulating phase current with dual MOSFET H-bridges, the unit allows motion controllers to achieve smooth low-speed movement and full-torque acceleration. It supports automated pick-and-place equipment, labeling machinery, and small gantry axes used in semiconductor and packaging lines.
The drive delivers a continuous phase current of 5 A, providing sustained torque without causing excessive thermal stress in NEMA-frame motors. For brief peak demands, it can source 7 A for up to 1 s, providing extra current during index starts or rapid direction changes. Current regulation is updated at 15 kHz, so dynamic error is corrected within microseconds even when step commands vary quickly. The input voltage may rise to 75 VDC, allowing motors with higher back electromotive force to reach rated speed while keeping bus capacitance moderate.
The lower bus limit is 20 VDC, permitting operation from compact 24 V plant supplies. Networked control is carried over CANopen at 1 Mbit/s, while legacy tools can access parameters through the auxiliary RS-232 port at 115200 baud. The separate serial connection provides a local diagnostic path when the CANopen network is reserved for cyclic motion traffic. Thermal protection automatically removes the gate drive if the heat sink reaches 70 °C, and voltage transients above 91 VDC trigger an overvoltage shutdown to protect internal components. The input supply should accommodate an 8 A surge during each acceleration segment, and the 30 kHz PWM ripple frequency guides filter selection when sensitive sensors share the enclosure. The drive has two motor phases and connects directly to standard hybrid stepper windings.
