The 800-989 DC servo amplifier is produced by Copley Controls within the DC Servo Amplifiers series. Designed for motion platforms, the unit converts low-level command signals into power-stage output for brushed or brushless DC motors used in pick-and-place modules, test stands, and handling axes. It supports torque, velocity, and voltage feedback operating modes, allowing a control system to select the loop that best matches the machine dynamics and accuracy requirements of industrial automation lines.
The amplifier accepts a differential control reference centered on ±10 V, and its high input impedance of 100 kΩ minimizes loading on upstream motion controllers. Internally, the reference path tolerates excursions up to ±20 V and uses a differential topology that rejects common-mode noise. Pulse-width modulation at 25 kHz moves switching noise outside the working band and reduces the current ripple detected through the ±6 V at ±Ipeak monitor output. Closed-loop dynamics in current mode extend to 3 kHz, whereas the voltage-mode bandwidth is limited to 200 Hz. This limit supports stable regulation when an external tachometer is used. A logic threshold of 2.5 V controls the transition between low and high states on the enable input.
Thermal and supply protections are integrated to prevent damage during abnormal operating conditions. An overtemperature trip activates at 70 °C, and the unit disconnects the power stage if the DC bus falls below 22 V to prevent brownout operation. The drive can sustain peak current during sudden load changes for up to 1 s, after which the current must return to its continuous operating range. It also produces an auxiliary rail of ±5 VDC at ±5 mA for external sensors or potentiometers. After a fault clears, the controller must wait 50 ms before resetting the amplifier and re-enabling motion, reducing the likelihood of immediately triggering another protective trip.
