The 7428AC is a DC servo amplifier produced by Copley Controls within the DC Servo Amplifiers series. It converts AC mains power into controlled DC outputs that drive brushless or brushed motion axes in industrial automation. The amplifier exchanges configuration data and diagnostic information through integrated serial interfaces. Installed between the motion controller and motor, it regulates current so the actuator follows commanded velocity, torque, or position profiles. This arrangement allows the motion controller to issue low-power commands while the amplifier supplies the electrical power required by the motor.
The command interface is selectable between RS-232 and RS-485, allowing point-to-point or multidrop connections to PLCs and computers. Power is accepted over a broad range of 32–264 VAC, so the module can be connected to single-phase or three-phase utility power without an additional transformer. A mains frequency tolerance of 50/60 Hz provides compatibility with either grid frequency. The analog input stage accepts reference signals up to ±20 V, allowing legacy ±10 V controllers to use the drive’s full input resolution while preserving calibration headroom. Primary overcurrent protection is provided by a 20 A time-delay fuse, which withstands motor inrush current but disconnects the amplifier during sustained faults. These input and protection features allow the amplifier to operate across a wide range of industrial power and control systems.
The encoder supply rail delivers up to 250 mA for connected encoder electronics and Hall sensors, eliminating the need for a separate low-voltage source in many installations. Motor phase conductors terminate on a 15-position Sub-D connector, while command and feedback signals use a 37-position Sub-D connector. These connector formats support organized separation of motor power, command, and feedback wiring. A DB-9 female data port provides access for configuration and service communication. The status output enters a high-impedance state when the bus voltage exceeds 50 V. When asserted low, the output has 5 Ω of on-resistance and can sink up to 125 mA, allowing it to operate compatible relays or optoisolators directly. This output behavior provides a clear electrical interface for upstream control and safety circuits without requiring complex signal conditioning.
