The 5221CE is a DC servo amplifier produced by Copley Controls within the DC Servo Amplifiers series. It conditions low-level command signals and drives brushed or brushless DC motors in automated axes that demand precise current regulation. By translating reference voltages into bidirectional armature current, the unit forms the power bridge between a motion controller and the motor. This operation supports closed-loop velocity or torque control in industrial machinery.
The amplifier delivers a continuous output of ±10 A at ±173 V, allowing stable torque production during steady-state motion. An output resistance of 0.2 Ω limits internal dissipation while maintaining tight current control across the load. Current loops respond within a 3 kHz bandwidth, and the pulse-width modulation stage switches at 25 kHz, minimizing audible noise and current ripple. Command logic recognizes high states above 2.5 V, making the amplifier compatible with 5 V or 24 V digital controllers. Reference ports have an input impedance of 94 kΩ and accept signals of up to ±20 V. Onboard regulators provide +5 V at 250 mA and +15 V at 5 mA for encoder or sensor electronics. Thermal and electrical protection include a temperature trip threshold of 70 °C. The high-bus protection threshold is 182 VDC, while the low-bus protection threshold is 22 VDC. When the temperature or bus voltage exceeds the applicable operating limit, pulse-width modulation stops to protect the power devices and connected machinery. Forced-air cooling helps remove heat from the amplifier when it operates under sustained load in an enclosed control cabinet.
