The 5221 is a DC servo amplifier produced by Copley Controls for the DC Servo Amplifiers series. In automation cells, it sits between a motion controller and a low-voltage servomotor, translating reference commands into regulated armature power so axes can follow velocity or position profiles with minimal error. The module integrates power electronics, signal conditioning, and fault monitoring in one enclosure. This design supports closed-loop motion in material-handling gantries, precision dispensers, and similar automated machinery.
The amplifier delivers a continuous output of 10 A while operating with a bus voltage of ±173 V. A PWM transconductance of 3.33 A/V links command voltage to output current, so a 3 V reference produces approximately 10 A at the motor leads. The control loop has a bandwidth of 3 kHz, allowing the drive to respond to rapid load changes. Its internal switching stage operates at 25 kHz, keeping switching noise above the normal audible range. The reference input has an impedance of 94 kΩ, which limits loading on the connected controller output. Dedicated logic inputs have a resistance of 10 kΩ, and a 2.5 V logic threshold distinguishes high and low states for enable and direction commands.
For short bursts, the unit can supply 20 A for one second, providing additional motor torque during acceleration. The 0.2 Ω output resistance limits voltage drop and power loss during these current peaks. An overvoltage trip activates at 182 VDC to protect the amplifier and connected motor circuit from excessive voltage. Thermal shutdown activates at 70 °C, while an undervoltage threshold of 22 VDC prevents the control electronics from operating when the supply is too low. Peak output voltage reaches ±171 V, allowing regenerative energy from a decelerating motor to return to the power supply. The command input accepts signals up to ±20 V without saturation, providing sufficient range for compatible motion controllers.
