The 503 DC servo amplifier is produced by Copley Controls within the DC Servo Amplifiers series. It converts command voltages from motion controllers into regulated armature currents so brushed servo motors can follow precise velocity or position profiles in automated machinery, pick-and-place axes, or laboratory equipment. By providing linear transconductance and built-in feedback monitoring, the unit closes the torque loop at the drive level, reduces the processing load on the host controller, and simplifies cabinet wiring in multi-axis installations.

The amplifier has a minimum power consumption of 2.5 W, while its power stage can sustain a continuous armature current of 5 A and deliver 250 W to the motor. The current loop has a closed-loop bandwidth of 2.5 kHz, allowing the drive to track rapid load changes without instability. Internal PWM switching occurs at 25 kHz, keeping ripple above the audible range and reducing motor heating. Command inputs have an impedance of 20 kΩ, and a transconductance of 1 A/V translates reference voltages into precise current levels. The current-monitor output also allows external control equipment to observe motor demand and respond when the measured current approaches the permitted range.
