The 4122 DC servo amplifier is produced by Copley Controls for the DC Servo Amplifiers series. It is designed to drive brushed or brushless DC motors in positioning and velocity-control loops found in automated machinery, pick-and-place axes, and robotics. By converting low-level command signals from a motion controller into a high-current pulse-width modulation output, the module forms the power interface between digital control electronics and the motor windings.
The current loop operates with a bandwidth of 3 kHz, enabling tight tracking of rapidly changing command profiles. A continuous output capability of 10 A supports midsize actuators without external boosters, while the reference stage accepts up to a ±20 V differential input so most ±10 V motion cards can fully modulate the drive. The power section tolerates supply rails from 22 VDC to 90 VDC, allowing the amplifier to share a single bus with other drives and reach higher motor speeds when a 90 V source is available. The reference input resistance is 94 kΩ, which minimizes the load on upstream analog sources. A 2.5 V logic threshold helps prevent noise on long field cables from affecting enable and fault signals. The amplifier clears latched faults after a 200 ms reset pulse, restoring operation without requiring the main supply to be cycled.
For short bursts, the output can rise to 20 A during a one-second peak interval and can maintain reverse current for two seconds before automatic foldback, providing headroom for acceleration and dynamic braking. Pulse-width modulation runs at 25 kHz, placing switching noise above the audible range and reducing motor torque ripple. Thermal protection trips at 70 °C to protect internal devices from excessive heat. The permitted load inductance ranges from 200 µH to 40 mH, accommodating compact frameless motors as well as larger armatures. Automatic foldback limits sustained overload current after the permitted peak interval. These protective responses allow the amplifier to interrupt unsafe operating conditions without requiring the main DC supply to be disconnected.
