The ASP-055-18 servo drive is produced by Copley Controls within the Accelus Servo Drives series. It operates as a DC-bus amplifier for brushless and brushed motors, translating motion-controller commands into pulse-width-modulated phase currents while monitoring feedback devices. In industrial automation, the module supplies regulated electrical power that keeps torque, speed, and position loops stable during rapid load changes.
The drive can sustain a continuous mechanical output of 0.32 kW by delivering up to 6 Adc per phase to the motor windings. For short bursts, it raises its delivery to a peak output of 0.92 kW, with phase current reaching 18 Adc for up to 1 s to support acceleration or disturbance rejection without overheating. The input stage accepts 6.7 Adc continuously and tolerates 20 Adc momentarily, so cabling and fusing must accommodate those values. Command inputs pass through a 66 kΩ analog impedance that limits source loading, and the signals are digitized with 12-bit resolution to preserve setpoint detail. High-speed control computations are supported by a 2 MHz digital position stream and an encoder interface that counts at 20 Mcount/s, ensuring that trajectory updates keep pace with modern linear and rotary scales. Motor waveforms are synthesized with a 40 kHz PWM ripple frequency to minimize audible noise and current ripple.
The power stage operates from a DC bus between +20 Vdc and +55 Vdc, enabling the same unit to run on 24 V or 48 V nominal supplies commonly used in mobile or cabinet-mounted machinery. Current regulation runs at 20 kHz, while the outer velocity and position loops run at 4 kHz; this arrangement provides fine phase-current control without sacrificing trajectory accuracy. When combined with the fast position and encoder channels, these loop rates allow the drive to maintain smooth motion across a wide range of inertial loads.
