It links a slice-style local I/O stack to a higher-level controller on an Ethernet plant network and is intended for compact control cabinets where distributed signals must be gathered without additional gateways. By operating as the first device in an S20 station, the unit handles protocol conversion and power distribution so that the digital or analog terminals that follow can exchange process data with the automation system in real time.
The primary network interface supports PROFINET, and the coupler draws power for its control electronics from a field supply of 24 V DC. A separate backplane inside the terminal row operates at 100 Mbps; this speed allows parameter and cyclic data to move between the coupler and each slice without creating a bottleneck. Mechanical terminations use a push-in connection method, so conductors can be inserted without tools.
