The S20-AIAO-2 is an analog input/output slice manufactured by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for its S20 IndraControl Modules series. Installed in a distributed I/O station, the slice exchanges measured values and setpoints between field devices and the higher-level controller, allowing compact signal conditioning on a DIN rail. It attaches to adjacent electronic modules through an integrated bus connector, so no external wiring is required between slices. This arrangement allows multiple I/O slices to communicate through the station bus while maintaining separate connections for their respective field signals.
The module receives system logic power from the local bus at 5 V DC, and its electronics have an IP20 degree of protection. This enclosure prevents fingers from contacting energized parts when the unit is installed in a closed cabinet. Mechanical placement is provided by a TH 35-7.5 mounting rail, which has a standard 35 mm profile that supports quick installation and removal. When communication with the higher-level bus is interrupted, the outputs use the last value held behavior and remain at the previously transmitted value, preventing sudden actuator movement. Process words are exchanged in big-endian format, so the most significant byte is placed first in memory to match the ordering expected by many control processors. Field signals are routed through a shielded twisted-pair cable, and the analog circuitry receives its reference from the dedicated UA (UAnalog) supply rail. If this rail loses power, all channels are driven to 0 V or 0 mA, depending on the signal type, which prevents unintended output to connected field devices. Parameter and diagnostic information moves over the peripheral data interface in an acyclic mode, allowing controller access outside the regular process data cycle. The cable shield is connected to functional earth at a single point to minimize ground loops that could introduce noise into analog measurements. Writable parameters are stored immediately when a change occurs, allowing updated settings to remain available after a power cycle. The separate paths for cyclic process words and acyclic service data allow routine signal exchange to continue while parameter or diagnostic records are accessed.
