The RZW03.1-250-015/S112 braking resistor is produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat and belongs to the RZW Braking Resistors series. Installed on the DC link of compatible drive controllers, it converts surplus regenerative energy into heat whenever a motor decelerates or a vertical axis lowers a load. By reducing DC-bus voltage during these events, the component helps protect insulated-gate transistors and bus capacitors from excessive stress. The part is supplied as a compact finned module that bolts to a cabinet frame and connects in parallel with the drive's chopper transistor for controlled energy dissipation in automated machinery. This function is especially useful on high-inertia axes where returned energy can rise quickly during braking.
Within a load cycle of 120 s, the resistor may conduct for up to 18 s, after which it must remain idle for 102 s to avoid thermal saturation. The required cooling interval prevents heat from building up in the resistor body during successive braking events. This on/off pattern yields an operating factor of 15% SD, which limits average thermal loading during intermittent duty. A peak-to-continuous energy ratio of 4:1 permits short bursts of high dissipative power, so aggressive braking currents can be absorbed without exceeding the aluminum core's steady-state capability. The drive switches the resistor into operation when DC-link voltage rises above the set threshold.
The housing has an IP23 rating, so it resists solid objects larger than 12 mm and is protected against water spray up to 60 degrees from vertical. This enclosure style is suited to ventilated cabinet installations rather than fully exposed mounting positions. Housing temperature must not exceed 80 °C at the hottest spot, and natural airflow around the fins must be maintained. Grounding uses a conductor of at least 10 mm² for fault-current clearance. The unit uses Design 1 mounting holes and terminal spacing.
