The RZW03.1-110-040 braking resistor is produced by Bosch Rexroth Indramat for the RZW Braking Resistors series. This Design 1 component integrates with multi-axis converters or inverters that return regenerated energy to the DC link. By presenting a fixed electrical load, the resistor converts surplus energy into heat and helps protect drive electronics from overvoltage during rapid stops, reversing movements, and load-lowering cycles. The freestanding assembly mounts outside the control cabinet, where natural convection can carry heat away without requiring a powered cooling system.
The housing measures 1100 mm high, 795 mm wide, and 490 mm deep, providing the dimensions needed to plan floor space and surrounding airflow clearance. Internally wound stainless-steel elements provide a rated resistance of 2.7 Ω, while special configurations must not use a resistance below the stated minimum of 2.5 Ω. Supply cables with conductor sizes of up to 70 mm² fit the landing points without exceeding the applicable current-density limits. The enclosure has an IP23 ingress protection rating, which guards internal components against objects larger than 12.5 mm and water spray entering at limited angles. This protection level is intended for sheltered electrical rooms rather than exposed outdoor locations or areas subject to direct washdown.
During braking cycles, the resistor tolerates a 100 kW load and has a rated braking capacity of 110 kW when the operating profile adheres to a 40% SD duty cycle. The permissible cycle consists of 48 seconds of energization followed by 72 seconds without energization, preventing the surface temperature from exceeding 80 °C. Heat dissipates according to a 100 s thermal time constant, while the assembly’s 112 kg mass helps moderate temperature changes between successive braking events. Installation requires securely tightening the M10 threaded terminals to maintain a low-resistance electrical connection under high current. The housing must also be bonded with a 10 mm² grounding conductor to provide a safe path for fault current in high-power drive installations.
