Product Description:
The RZW02.1-160-025 braking resistor is supplied by Bosch Rexroth Indramat within the RZW Braking Resistors series. Installed on an inverter’s DC bus, it converts surplus regenerative energy into heat so the bus voltage remains within safe limits during rapid braking or load-lowering sequences. This function protects industrial automation systems when high-inertia axes return significant energy to the converter. The resistor is suitable for applications in which the drive cannot return all regenerated energy to the incoming power supply.
The resistor network has a rated power capacity of 160 kW and a nominal resistance of 2.4 Ω. During a 120-second load cycle, the element may conduct for up to 30 seconds before requiring a recovery interval of 90 seconds. This operating pattern helps protect the ceramic cores from thermal overstress during repeated braking events. Wiring is routed through two supply lines, each of which accepts copper conductors with cross-sectional areas of up to 70 mm², while the protective grounding conductor requires a cross-sectional area of at least 10 mm². Design code 1 and line code 2 correspond to an enclosure measuring 960 mm high, 795 mm wide, and 490 mm deep. The enclosure is rated IP20, providing basic protection against accidental contact during cabinet installation. A thermal time constant of 100 seconds indicates how quickly the internal temperature responds after the resistor is energized. The unit can be connected in parallel with loads having a resistance as low as 2.2 Ω when the drive system requires additional energy dissipation.
During short braking bursts, the assembly can dissipate up to 144 kW. Its operating duty must remain within 25% SD to keep the surface temperature below 80 °C. The steel frame and ceramic carriers give the unit a total mass of 102 kg, providing thermal inertia for repeated energy absorption. Adequate enclosure clearance and ventilation are necessary because the converted regenerative energy is released as heat. Installation must also account for the unit’s weight and conductor sizes so that its mounting structure and electrical connections remain secure during operation.
